SURVEY SHOW MAINFRAME USE DOWN, WINDOWS 95 USE UP

International Data Corp. of Framingham, Mass. recently completed the U.S. segment of its fifth annual global information technology survey. The study examines IT directions and spending patterns. The market research firm conducted 12,000 in-depth interviews with small, medium, and large businesses in the United States, Japan, and six countries in Western Europe, representing more than three quarters of the worldwide market.

Key findings from the U.S. segment of the survey include:

• More than 12% of business sites anticipate their future mainframe use to increase; less than 3% expect a decrease.

• Although 40% of business sites plan to buy PCs in 1996, on average, they will buy fewer PCs than in 1995.

• 60% of PCs at business sites surveyed are running Windows 3.X, compared to 14% running Windows 95. In 1996, business sites anticipate 54% of PCs to be running Windows 3.X and over 30% to be running Windows 95.
- Sites were most likely to use an outside service firm for hardware maintenance: more than half of the sites surveyed indicated the use of an outside service firm for hardware maintenance.
