IBM STILL A FORCE IN THE TAPE STORAGE MARKET

The recent emphasis on the digital linear tape market has showcased the technical expertise of Quantum Corp. and its tape storage operation in Shrewsbury, Mass. However, the major force in the tape storage industry, IBM Storage Subsystem Division, in San Jose, Calif. continues to set the technology standard for the industry.

Recently, the company announced three new capabilities for its tape storage operations. One was ESCON-attachment capability for its Magstar 3590 tape storage technology. This provides mainframe customers a single-cartridge capacity 50 times greater than that of today’s most widely used 1/2-inch cartridges. The new Magstar 3591 Tape Control Unit, which attaches Magstar 3590 Tape Subsystems to IBM System/390 processors, will be available on May 31.

Besides ESCON-attachment for Magstar, the tape storage announcements include:

• Enhancements for the 3494 Tape Library that makes it easier to use and reduce costs of operation;

• Support for the SCSI version of the Magstar drive as an open-systems tape storage solution for use with computers from four different manufacturers, and

• A new SCSI-attached 4-millimeter tape library for the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) marketplace.
