DAT TAPE COMPETES WITH DLT FOR MIDRANGE MARKET
The emergence of a midrange back-up tape drive market
has tape drive suppliers rushing to offer libraries to serve the demand.
The latest is Qualstar Corp. of Canoga Park, Calif. This month, it introduced
a 4mm DAT cartridge tape automated library family for enterprise-wide
network backup, high-capacity storage and data archive applications.
The TLS-2000 Series comes in six models, with storage capacities ranging
from 72 gigabytes to 1.2 terabytes. All use the4mm 2 DAT cartridge.
The DDS-3 drives coming in the second half of 1996 will boost capacity
to well over 3 terabytes.
The library comes in six models, with the 2218, 2218A and 2236 supporting
two DAT drives and the 2436, 2472 and 24144 supporting up to four DAT
drives. Field expansion kits can double storage capacity of some models.
The libraries use DAT tape drives from Hewlett-Packard, Sony and Conner. The
libraries have I/O ports to remove or insert individual tape cartridges
without opening the front door, and support barcode scanning. The company’s
Inventory Sentry and patented tape-wear reduction systems are also incorporated.
Qualstar replaced the belts and pulleys commonly used in other designs
with brushless-DC motors and high-precision lead screws. Digital closed-loop
motion control systems and optical position sensors assure trouble-free
cartridge handling.
