DLT TAPE MARKET TAKES OFF

In the just-published 1996 edition of Mass Storage Outlook: Tape Libraries, Ray Freeman, president of Freeman Associates, Inc. in Santa Barbara, Calif, says tape libraries are rapidly expanding sales worldwide.

“By 2001, corporations will have automated the storage management function to manage and protect the massive and rapidly expanding amounts of critical business data. DLT libraries will be an important beneficiary of this trend. We forecast that the installed base of all tape libraries will balloon from 33,763 units in 1995 to 414,035 by 2001.”

Freeman shows ATL Products Inc. of Anaheim, Calif. leading the high-end DLT library market, with a 55% share for product with more than 40 cartridges, 62% ahead of the next contender in the category. In the under-40 cartridges category, ATL Products has 11% market share even though first shipment of the ATL's ACL2/28 library was in late 1995.
