COMPUSERVE SENDS E-MAIL TO PAGER
One of the new directions in wireless communications is
toward distributing data via pagers. An example of where commercial
on-line information suppliers are moving is shown in the recent announcement
by PageNet and Compuserve to allow mobile workers with pagers to receive
e-mail messaging from Compuserve.
PageNet provides the connectivity. Compuserve provides the on-line service
that allows any user able to access Compuserve directly or via the Internet
to send a message to anyone with a pager that PageNet Services. Future
offerings will include wireless e-mail filter and forwarding services,
as well as value-added news and information services.
This capability holds the potential to revitalize the personal digital
assistant. Adding a pager to the PDA allows it to receive, process,
and react to transmitted information. One example frequently cited is
monitoring stock prices. Continuously monitoring stock prices, the PDA
can alert the user of precipitous rises or declines in stock prices
as they occur.
The current capability debuted March 7. PageNet partnered with CompuServe
to offer e-mail messaging to all CompuServe members who carry PageNet
pagers. The service is available immediately. PageNet paging subscribers
who are CompuServe members can register their PageNet numeric or alphanumeric
pagers on CompuServe for a one-time fee of $5.00.
Thereafter, the user receives wireless e-mail messages from anyone on
CompuServe or with Internet access around the world. Messages can be
sent using the paging subscriber’s e-mail address, rather than
a pager PIN number or telephone number.
