IC ENABLES PC FOR UNDER $2000

In another example of the power of many companies developing hardware for a common platform, a Mountain View, Calif. start-up this month debuted a chip that will enable a multimedia PC for under $2,000. The Mpact coprocessor from Chromatic Research Inc. supports the Direct3D applications programmer interface from Microsoft.

In addition, the chip will support 28.8 kilobits per second data communications, decompress MPEG-2 video, compress and decompress MPEG-1 video, play wave tables and Sound Blaster-compatible audio, display 2D and 3D graphics, and enable videoconferencing. Furthermore, the chip will sell for under $75. It will be in production this summer by three semiconductor companies:

1. Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc., Irvine, Calif.
2. LG Semicon Co. Ltd., Seoul Korea
3. Advanced Micro Devices of Sunnyvale, Calif.
