SET-TOP PC MAKERS AIM TO BUILD $900 SOLUTION
At the November 1995 Comdex Show in Las Vegas, Nev. Sony
Electronics, in Park Ridge, N.J. announced plans to partner with Intel
Corp. of Santa Clara, Calif. to produce a line of low-cost consumer
PCs.
"Our vision for these PCs is that they will be designed as a consumer
device, although we expect that there would be some cross-over into
the business market," Rick Clancy, vice president of corporate
communications at Sony Electronics, in Park Ridge, N.J. declared.
Other companies aiming to build a PC-based set-top box include Sony’s
Asian rivals. Intel rivals hoping to take advantage of this strategy
include SGS Thomson Microelectronics. The Agrate Brianza, Italy-based
semiconductor company has plans to build a highly integrated 486-based
IC that will enable a set-top box solution in the $500 to $1000 price
range.
