TWO PC MAKERS INCLUDE ZIP DRIVE IN THEIR SYSTEMS
Last month, Iomega Corp. of Roy, Utah announced that The
Acer Group of Taipei, Taiwan, plans to include the Zip drive as a storage
device in the company’s new PC Line, AcerBasic. The Acer system
will be officially launched in June and sell for $500 (U.S.).
Iomega also announced a similar deal with Packard Bell Electronics,
Inc. The Sacramento, Calif. PC maker is currently shipping Zip drives
in certain of its PCs.
Iomega hopes these two deals will help blunt the effects of a deal between
Compaq Computer Corp. of Houston, Tex. and O.R. Technology of San Jose,
Calif. Compaq is shipping O.R.’s 120-Mbyte floppy drive in its
high end PC line (see story facing page).
The AcerBasic line is based on mainstream PC technology. The standard
CPU is a 5x86 chip, packaged with 4 Mbytes of memory and the 100-Mbyte
removable storage Zip drive. Software includes DOS, Windows 3.1, an
Internet browser package, and several game and education programs.
Capable of being connected to standard VGA computer monitors, the AcerBasic
offers added benefits to home users with its ability to connect directly
to any standard television set.
