DEVELOPERS SELL GAMES BY GIVING THEM AWAY
The 1996 SIMBA Game Player Survey conducted by the popular
Internet site Happy Puppy Games, SIMBA Information and The Greenfield
Consulting Group found that giving away games over the Internet is the
way to sell the product.
The 2,000 computer game purchasers surveyed, said they bought software
based on an earlier shareware demo of the products downloaded from the
Internet. Worldwide shareware sales are estimated at $350 million, according
to the Association of Shareware Professionals.
One example of shareware’s popularity is the Duke Nukem 3D Screen
Saver and Entertainment Pack. Four weeks before its retail debut, the
shareware version was released over the Internet by Rhode Island Soft
Systems, Woonsocket, R.I. It broke shareware records with 200,000 downloads
(the average shareware program is roughly 20,000 downloads).
