RAMAC WINS RAID SURVEY

Xephon, an independent market research firm located in Newbury, Berkshire, U.K., regularly surveys a panel of nearly a thousand mainframe users worldwide on a variety of topics of interest to IS management.

A worldwide survey conducted last year showed that IBM's RAMAC Array Family was a leader in providing storage availability, reliability and protection against data loss.

Over 550 sites world-wide participated in the Xephon survey of mainframe customers. Responses came in from the USA and Canada (59%), Northern Europe and the U.K. (25%) and elsewhere around the world (16%).

Of those surveyed, 138 of the sites reported having DASD arrays installed, some with arrays from more than one company. Nearly half (67 sites) reported IBM RAMAC arrays, nearly half (68 sites) reported EMC devices, and almost 10% (13 sites) had Storage Technology Corp. Icebergs installed. The survey included comparisons of IBM RAMAC devices to EMC Symmetrix 5500 and STK Iceberg 9200 machines.
