MICROSOFT’S “INSTANT ON” PC INITIATIVE
• The PC responds to wake-up events—faxes,
e-mail or user requests to browse the Internet—even when it appears
to be off. During its power down state, the PC uses little energy.
• Application software adjusts behavior when the PC’s power
state changes.Operating system and application programs work together
to operate the PC to user’s needs and expectations, and to deliver
effective power management. For example, applications will participate
with the operating system and hardware in turning off the PC to save
energy.
• All devices installed in the PC or added by the user, participate
in power management unlike current power management that exclude new
peripherals. The OnNow system can change the power state of any conforming
device. For instance, a peripheral such as a modem or CD-ROM will be
turned off when the device is not in use by the application.
