MAGAZINE PREDICTS PC SALES SLOWDOWN IN ‘96
Trade publication Computer Reseller News of Manhasset,
N.Y. is predicting a slow 1996 for PCs. Unit sales to large firms will
grow modestly in the second half of 1996 CRN says. However, the magazine
predicts sales to smaller companies will remain strong through Q2, though
growth rates will not be as high as they were in the first quarter.
In the first half of 1995, large companies sales were up 33% over 1994,
but for the same period this year, CRN forecasts a 5% to 7% increase.
Spending in December 1995 and January 1996 reflect large company purchases
of Windows 95 and associated products.
On average large companies each spent $531,000 in December, 35% above
the old record of $394,000 set in 1994. This capped three month of spending,
following Windows 95’s debut in which sales jumped 37%.
This binge came to a halt in January 1996. Spending per firm was $225,000,
down 24% from January 1995 and the lowest for this month since 1992.
While desktops sales are slowing, servers and workstations sales will
remain strong, says CRN's Director of Editorial Research, John Roberts.
Companies, such as HP, Compaq, IBM and Sun Microsystems should do well.
